Network Slicing
▶ Introduction
 

5G networks are intended to provide mainly three types of services: massive machine type communications (mMTC), ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB). The mMTC is characterized by massive number of devices communicating with each other and requires low cost along with long battery backup time. Apart from that, URLLC need simultaneous low latency and ultra-reliability. On the other hand, eMBB requires higher data rates along with large coverage area. To enable users with eMBB, mMTC, and URLLC, it’s imperative to redesign the network architecture. Network slicing is a promising candidate to allow 5G networks to offer a wide variety of services and applications such as e-health, augmented reality, smart transportation system, smart banking, smart farming, and mobile gaming. The notion of the network slicing is to leverage the network infrastructure resources for creation of multiple subnetworks for different types of services and applications. Then, each subnetwork will perform slicing of the physical network resources to yield an independent network for its applications. To enable different 5G services, slices of different types for mMTC, URRLC, and eMBB services that utilize the network resources can be created. We can assign each slice type with complete end-to-end network resources; however, it does not seem practical because of the high expense. On the other hand, it would be feasible to allow sharing of the network resources among multiple types of slices using technologies like network function virtualization and software defined networking. Overview of network slicing is given in Fig. 1
